Understanding the Registry of Organ Donation

Being a Pennsylvania driver's license or state ID holder allows you the opportunity to become a registered organ donor when applying or renewing a license and/or ID card through any of your local Pennsylvania Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division office (PennDOT). When you apply to be an organ donor you will be registered through Donate Life Pennsylvania. They are the official organ donor program through the PennDOT.

What is the Pennsylvania Donate Life Donor Registry?

Donate Life Pennsylvania gives residents the opportunity to register as an organ and tissue donor through the PennDOT. When you sign up through the Pennsylvania Donate Life Donor Registry they will enter you into their system, which is legal consent for donation.

How and where to register for Donate Life:

  • On the PA Donate Life Donor Registry website you will be redirected to the PennDOT, where you can fill out an online form. Just go to:
  • Through a Pennsylvania DOT office upon renewing your vehicle's registration/ driver's license/ state ID.
  • If registering at a PA DOT office, you'll need to fill in the appropriate box indicating organ donor on the driver's license application.

If you want to deal with the main PennDOT offices directly you can go in person, or contact them at:

Remember, it's a choice not a prerequisite to be an organ donor in PA, or in any state in the U.S. It is not a requirement to have it on a Pennsylvania driver's license or ID. If you don't want to become a registered organ donor at the time of application or renewal, but still want to contribute to the cause, consider a monetary donation.
