How To Renew Your Pennsylvania Drivers License

Need to renew your Pennsylvania drivers license? We've collected helpful information that will save you time, and we offer links to resources that will get you going in the right direction. Select from the options below to get started.

1: Get Started with Online Application Services

Online application assistance can simplify the process for many DVS related services for a fee, including: renewing your license, applying for a license, registering a vehicle, replacing your license, changing your address and more. Where possible, we will prepare your DVS forms and/or provide links to DVS online services. You will also receive 30 days of both emergency Roadside Assistance and the Repair Assist consultation service from Road America. Other benefits include an ongoing monthly newsletter and a quarterly magazine covering important updates that affect drivers, important safety tips, trends, legislative updates and ways to save money on vehicle-related services.

2: By mail, if eligible (read below for instructions)

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DVS in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DVS.

3: Via a local DVS office

If you prefer to access DVS services in person or your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at a physical DVS office location. Varying DVS offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DVS closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your local DVS allows you to make a personal appointment. Read more below to see if an in-person visit is either preferred or required.

Renewing a Drivers License in Pennsylvania

It is against Pennsylvania state law to drive with an expired license.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will send you an invitation to renew form (DL60A/DL60R), three months before your license expires. If you have not received your "Invitation to Renew," you may renew by downloading the Form DL-901.

To begin the Pennsylvania drivers license renewal process, you must decide whether you want to file your renewal paperwork through the mail or online. A driver's license renewal form may be obtained online or at a driver's license department.  This form is to be mailed, along with a check or money order to cover the fee.

Online renewal can only be processed if there are no changes or corrections needed to the driver's license. Drivers can visit the DVS website and renew by providing:

Camera Card Renewal

Once the DVS receives your drivers license renewal form, the state’s DOT they will send you a renewal for your camera card within seven to 10 business days.. This is then taken to a photo center along with an additional form of identification and a social security card to complete the renewal process. At the photo license center, the applicant's photo will be taken and then a new driver's license will be issued.

The fee to renew a regular Pennsylvania driver's license for four years is $34.50, while a two-year renewal for driver's over the age of 65 is $24.
